After Richard Altwasser designed the ZX Spectrum’s hardware and Steve Vickers the ROM of the ZX81 and Spectrum, both left Sinclair Research and formed Jupiter Cantab. The name ACE is taken from one of the earliest British computers, the 1950’s Pilot ACE (an acronym for Automatic Computing Engine).
The ACE ran the FORTH programming language instead of the more common BASIC language.
An estimated 5000 machines were sold of which 800 were of the ACE 4000 which was sold in the USA.
